Name: Susie Shank
From: Poway, CA
Lives: Schulenburg, TX (moved to TX in 1991)
Family: Married to Tony Shank, with 4 children - Jessica (20), Katy (19), Elizabeth (15) and Charlie (12)
Industry Affiliation: I always loved living rural and cattle. I was in 4-H and FFA and showed steers in high school. I judged livestock in FFA and for UC Davis, my alma mater. I visited TX once with my family the summer after 8th grade, and then was here to judge at the HLSR in 1989. I was hired and moved to TX after college and sold animal health pharmaceuticals from 1991 - 2002 when we started our family. My husband is still in the industry
CattleWomen Connection: I was an at-large member of Texas CattleWomen starting in 1992. I was the liaison between my company, Merck AgVet, and Texas CattleWomen for the Ivomec Generation of Excellence campaign. I started the CrossRoads CattleWomen in Victoria soon after (sadly they no longer are active). When I moved to Schulenburg, I started the Navidad Valley CattleWomen. I was every state officer and chair over the years except president, as I felt I needed to be a producer to hold such an esteemed office for our state.
If I was a heifer what breed would I be? OR Favorite Breed of Cattle: I always liked Gelbvieh, even though we don't see many here in Texas. Gelbvieh cattle are known for maternal strengths such as fertility, quiet temperament and longevity ... well I think I missed the first two qualities, but hope to hit the second! Gelbvieh cattle also exhibit muscling and growth along with feed efficiency ... I can check both of those! So good mom and easy keeper!
